Since its launch in 2020 by Yacht Club de Monaco and Credit Suisse (a UBS Group brand), SEA Index® has established itself as the go-to superyacht environmental impact rating system. Through transparent, unbiased assessment, the SEA Index® allows stakeholders to easily assess and compare a yacht’s environmental impact. This includes through the official SEA Index® certification, verified and issued by Lloyd’s Register, and online tools such as the Lifecycle Emissions Calculator, an operational efficiency assessment method developed in partnership with RINA. Since September 2024, SEA Index® became the first assessment tool to integrate analysis of fuel cell technologies into its CO2 certification. SEA Index® is committed to expanding its offering of tools, and is currently working on ways to measure other greenhouse gases, including NOx emissions and noise pollution. By using globally recognised methodologies and by partnering with maritime class companies, SEA Index® offers a toolkit and network to owners looking for ways to adopt yachting practices that reduce their impact on the environment.
Environmental impact is expressed in grams of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere per gross ton per hour, which is representative of the volume of the vessel’s enclosed space. The SEA Index® evaluation system is based on the International Maritime Organisation’s methodology, with specific adaptations for yachts over 24 metres. The process is straightforward and involves submitting a boat’s offical documents, which are then analyzed using the SEA Index® tool.
